Laser-cut steel adaptor plates that cover the oversized cut-out left behind when a larger downlight is replaced with a smaller one — no patching, no plasterer, no repaint. Optional spring clips for a fixing-free install.
From: $30.00 AUD
Our Downlight Conversion Plates — also known as adaptor plates, adapter plates, retro rings, goof rings, trim rings or LED washers — solve one of the most common problems in a downlight retrofit: the new fitting is smaller than the hole the old one left behind.
Rather than patching, sanding and repainting the ceiling, the adaptor plate sits between the ceiling and the new downlight’s trim, covering the original cut-out completely.
Every plate is laser-cut from electro-galvanised steel — zinc-plated before it is powder-coated, so the substrate is already corrosion-protected underneath the finish. If the powder-coat is ever chipped or scratched during installation, the zinc layer keeps working. It is a longer-lasting build than a bare-metal plate with paint over the top.
Because the plate is steel, it is also magnetic — so it works with our optional Magnetic Dress Plate if you want to conceal cabling or a cord-grip above it.
Ø90mm is the de-facto standard cut-out for modern Australian LED downlights — manufacturers have converged on it over the last few years. Our plates are cut with a Ø92mm inner diameter so the plate clears the fitting body with roughly 1mm of tolerance on each side, rather than fouling on it during installation.
Measure the diameter of your existing ceiling hole, then choose a plate whose outer diameter comfortably overhangs it.
| Adaptor Plate | Suits new downlight cut-out | Covers existing hole up to |
|---|---|---|
| Ø140mm OD × Ø92mm ID | Ø90mm (the Australian convention) | ~135mm |
There is no Australian Standard that specifies downlight cut-out diameters — what exists is a strong industry convention. Older halogen and early LED fittings vary widely, which is exactly why adaptor plates are needed.
| Downlight | Typical cut-out |
|---|---|
| 2″ | 55mm |
| 2.5″ | 75–80mm |
| 3″ | 85–100mm |
| 3.5″ | 90–100mm |
| 4″ | 110–130mm |
If you are removing a downlight altogether rather than replacing it, an adaptor plate is the wrong part — you want a solid cover. See our Spring / Recessed Coverplates, which use a concealed dual-spring bracket to grip the existing hole and sit flush with no visible fixings.
We laser-cut, fold and powder-coat in-house, so we can make these to your specification — round, square or rectangular, any inside and outside dimension, with your chosen quantity and position of spring clips.
Custom plates are Price-on-Application — use the enquiry form to send through your requirements. Please ensure all dimensions are correct before ordering: items made to customer specification cannot be returned.
