Industrial Pendant Lights

It comes down to three things, not just an Edison globe. First, history: the design earned its keep on the factory floor — bare trouble-lights and wire guards strung over workbenches, then the spun "warehouse shade" that spread through mills, depots and railway sheds from the 1930s. Second, form before finish: exposed bolts, a visible cord or chain, and minimal shielding — built to do a job, with the making left on show rather than hidden away. Third, honest finishes: the originals wore green porcelain enamel, galvanised steel or flat black, and we keep that look while spinning ours in aluminium so it won't corrode — heritage green, Black Ace, raw metal or aged brass. If a pendant echoes that working past in its shape, its hardware and its finish, it reads as industrial. Every shade here is hand-spun to order in our Carrum Downs workshop.

Choose cord for the cleanest, most minimal drop; choose chain when you want more presence or need to carry a heavier shade. Cord suits lighter shades and indoor spots like a kitchen island or stairwell, where a single clean line looks best. Chain comes into its own with larger or heavier shades — it carries the load far better than a cord taking all the strain, so you can go bigger, and the visible links read as more rugged and more industrial. Outdoors or in exposed positions, chain's weight steadies the shade so it sways slowly rather than whipping in a breeze, and before a storm you can simply re-hook it higher out of the way. Chain is also easy to shorten — loop a higher link onto the supplied quick-link to lift it clear of a long table. Same shades, two very different drops.

The standard drop is one metre on both cord and chain, and we supply a little extra cable so your electrician can terminate it neatly — because every light is hand-wired, that overage varies slightly. If you order extra cable, the chain is matched to suit. Chain is adjustable after delivery: hook a higher link onto the supplied quick-link to shorten it, and the spare link simply hangs at the canopy, which most people like as extra industrial detail — or it lifts off with two pairs of pliers, since the links aren't welded. Cord, by contrast, is set at installation and can't be lengthened or shortened afterwards, so measure first: hold the light at your intended height and check it clears heads and sightlines before it is wired in. Like all mains-wired lighting in Australia, installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Yes — pendants are one of the most popular ways to light an island, and the two numbers that matter are height and spacing. Hang the bottom of each shade about 700–800mm above the benchtop, a little higher for a taller household so nobody is dazzled. For a 2.1-metre island, three 35cm shades is the sweet spot; step up to three 40cm shades on a 2.4-metre island. Prefer a bolder look? Two oversized shades work beautifully — a pair of 50cm shades on a 2.1-metre bench, or 60cm on 2.4 metres. Leave roughly 30cm from each end, and for a row of three keep the gaps between shades to about half to three-quarters of a shade's diameter; any tighter starts to look cluttered. Two 60cm shades won't fit a 2.1-metre island, so size down or drop to a single statement pendant.

Because every light is made to order, allow 7–10 business days for production plus transit to your address. Standard configurations move fastest; adding custom cable lengths, extra accessories or a duotone finish adds a little to the build, but single-unit orders rarely exceed 14 business days before they ship. Larger or commercial quantities are quoted case by case — and helpfully, the more identical pieces you order, the quicker the run goes, because they move through the same spinning and finishing process together.
