Caged Lights

The cage earns its place twice over. Practically, a cast guard over the glass protects the globe and diffuser in positions where fittings take knocks — walkways, loading areas, sheds, school corridors and anywhere a bare glass fitting would eventually meet a broom handle or a ball. That's why the style comes from ships' passageways and factory walls, where lighting had to survive its environment. Aesthetically, the cage is the most unmistakably industrial silhouette in lighting: even switched off, a bunker light reads as considered, heritage-informed design, which is why the style now appears on coastal builds and inner-city renovations that have never seen a forklift. Barely — and less than you'd guess by looking at it. The guard's ribs occupy a small fraction of the opening, and because the globe sits behind frosted or clear glass that already diffuses the light, the cage reads as fine shadow detail on nearby surfaces rather than as lost brightness. In practice you choose globe output exactly as you would for an uncaged fitting of the same size: around 800–1,000 lumens of warm LED covers a doorway or path position comfortably. Two honest notes: a caged light is a feature and ambient fitting, not a floodlight — if you need broad area lighting, pair caged fittings at the human scale with higher output elsewhere; and clear-glass versions throw crisper cage shadows than frosted ones, which some owners love as part of the look and others don't. Anywhere the fitting is close to people, weather or work. At entryways and beside doors, the caged form gives a home instant maritime or industrial character at eye level, where the detail is appreciated. In working spaces — sheds, workshops, barns, commercial corridors — the guard does its original job of protecting the globe from knocks. And in heritage renovations, a caged wall light reads as period-correct in a way few modern fittings manage.
