Every aspect of the Aganoa Lodge Samoa guest experience is designed to immerse you in Savai’i’s pristine natural environment. Our goal is to transport you to another time and place — a world of open air and open spaces, of falling asleep to the soft patter of rain on a tin roof or waking to the kiss of a light trade-wind breeze sliding off the ocean.

Late one year we received an email from Josef, an interior designer in the United States working on a project in Samoa that needed several light fixtures. After some back and forth we settled on the products, finishes and custom fixtures he had in mind. The cruel irony: everything had to arrive in early January, and we finalised the details just before Christmas — right as most of our contractors were closing for the break. We sourced shades before galvanising, worked against a long list of rushed orders, pulled plenty of late nights, and got it all boxed and shipped to Samoa, a solid eight-hour flight away.

So what makes a little resort in Samoa want the best outdoor lighting Australia and the United States have to offer? Quality. Hand-spun Australian-made shades, hand-painted finishes, die-cast components, and genuine resistance to rust and corrosion.

In 2003, veteran Pacific explorer Keith Martin and his wife Lanuola opened the “doors” (though there were none) to the Aganoa Beach Retreat. For more than a decade it remained frozen in time while the Martins raised their family and hosted travelling surfers lucky enough to find their way to Savai’i. In 2014 the operation was rebranded Aganoa Lodge Samoa through a partnership between the Martins and Pegasus Lodges. San Francisco-based designer Josef Medellin was engaged to oversee a complete refurbishment — an atmosphere of rustic luxury, highly designed and curated yet never forgetful of its humble roots.
