The “Queenslander” & Modern Farmhouse Appeal

The Universal Warehouse Shade provides a broad spread of light refracted from its dish-like dome, shielding eyes and neighbours from direct glare. This semi-deep bowl style permits focused illumination without the broader spread associated with our Original or Old Dixie Gooseneck lights.

Considered a “Farmhouse” or “Queenslander” styled light, the Universal blends the simplicity of the Hamptons with a decorative, slanted neck that adds a touch of authenticity for those looking for a softer, homier vibe.

Perfect for Queenslander Homes: Queenslander homes feature classic Australian architectural designs: steeply pitched roofs, wide verandahs, and elevated timber construction built to withstand harsh weather—much like our Universal Wall Lights. With their high ceilings and large windows, these spacious homes are the perfect canvas for our fixtures. The Queenslander lifestyle emphasizes outdoor living and entertaining; the Universal allows you to seamlessly maintain that traditional styling from the indoor spaces right out to the backyard.

A Stop-Gap Between Original & Modern

A century or two ago, manufacturing hard-edged, detailed lighting shades was unaffordable for the average person. Early fixtures (like the Austin Gooseneck) provided little detail because wooden or untreated steel molds would wear away when spinning concave designs or hard edges.

The Universal represents the stop-gap between “Original” and “Modern.” The neck detail was so highly requested by designers (like Heliconia’s Breezeway) that we scrapped our older 25cm shade—which had an unsightly sharper neckline—to develop this new profile. The bottom “skirt” mirrors our 40cm Original Warehouse Shade, mixed with the slanted neck of our Astro Warehouse Shade. The final modern banding unique to the Universal provides an incredible amount of detail for a seemingly simple shade.

Materials & craft

Every shade is hand-spun in our Carrum Downs workshop — shaped on a lathe, not pressed in a die. We work in aluminium for three reasons:

• It’s light. A spun-aluminium shade weighs a fraction of a steel equivalent, easier to ship and mount, with less load on brackets, arms, and ceiling roses.
• It doesn’t corrode. Steel rusts. Aluminium doesn’t — even in coastal salt or humid climates. Powdercoat seals it; the underlying metal stays sound for the long haul.
• It takes more skill to spin. Aluminium is softer and less forgiving than steel, so a clean shade silhouette is a craft outcome, not a stamping outcome.
