The Old Dixie Chain Hung Pendant: vintage style, modern flexibility

The Old Dixie isn’t a one-shape shade. The 28 cm and 33 cm are flared bells — they spread a broad, generous wash of light, perfect over a kitchen island, a dining table, or a shopfront counter. The 43 cm is a true deep bowl — it drops a tighter, more directed pool of light, better suited to outdoor porches, statement entryways, or a single-pendant install over a longer dining setting. Three sizes, three jobs

The 28 cm Old Dixie is the petite option — over a kitchen island with a bare bulb, where you want a visual focal point without taking up sightlines. The 33 cm Old Dixie is our most-ordered size: the flared-bell silhouette throws a wide light dispersal that fills any room with warm, even light. The 43 cm Old Dixie is the statement piece: deep bowl shape, ideal for outdoor porches, deep eaves, or a single anchor pendant over a long dining table. Modern Warehouse styling — built to last

The hard edges, flared profile, and cascading skirt of the Old Dixie’s industrial design provide a level of sophistication you won’t get from cheaper imitations. Lovingly crafted by our metal spinner using a decade-old steel mould, the build quality holds up against the imports. Whilst Chain Pendant Lights are common in Australia, rarely are they manufactured well enough to stand the test of time — these are.

Materials & craft

Every Old Dixie shade is hand-spun in our Carrum Downs workshop — shaped on a lathe, not pressed in a die. We work in aluminium for three reasons:

• It’s light. A spun-aluminium shade weighs a fraction of a steel equivalent — important for a fixture suspended from a chain, where every gram saved reduces load on the ceiling rose and the chain itself.
• It doesn’t corrode. Steel rusts. Aluminium doesn’t — even in coastal salt or humid climates. Our powdercoat seals it; the underlying metal stays sound for the long haul.
• It takes more skill to spin. Aluminium is softer and less forgiving than steel, so a clean banded silhouette is a craft outcome, not a stamping outcome.

Where to install your new Old Dixie Light

Customers often know they want a “nice pendant light” but aren’t sure exactly where it goes. A few options based on our most common installs:

• Hang the Old Dixie over a dining table for ambient mood lighting — fills the space with bright, distributed light.
• In an interior room that faces away from the evening sun, or an empty corner of the living space — break out the reading chair.

Why chain hung over a fixed pendant

Repositioning. An industrial chain-hung suspension grants pendants plenty of versatility. Hang the Old Dixie closer to the ground for a more intimate lighting scheme, or higher up for general lighting at a (children’s?) party where the kitchen table needs to be relocated. Outdoor rating. Our use of outdoor-rated, die-cast assemblies means you’re a Quick Link away from the perfect lighting solution for an event. The 43 cm Old Dixie is better suited to “deep bowl” applications — over kitchen benches, or anywhere that needs brighter, directed lighting. We Silicon Plug all of our Chain Hung Pendant Lights (since 2022), so all pendants ship outdoor-rated IP44 as standard (with dry ceilings).

High wind? No longer a problem. The Old Dixie Chain Hung isn’t designed for full-gust exposure, but you shouldn’t rule it out in moderate-wind areas where a standard barn pendant wouldn’t last.
