What IP rating do I need for outdoor wall lights in Australia?

For most covered positions — under eaves, on a veranda or beside a sheltered front door — an IP44-rated wall light is all you need, and every Barn Light wall light meets at least that standard. The first digit of an IP rating covers solids (dust), the second covers water: IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, which handles wind-blown rain in a sheltered spot comfortably. If the wall cops direct weather — an exposed façade, a beach-front elevation, or anywhere salt spray reaches — step up to our IP55-rated Weatherproof range, which seals against dust ingress and water jets rather than just splashes. A simple test: stand at the mounting point in heavy rain. If you'd stay mostly dry, IP44 is fine; if you'd be soaked, buy IP55. Both ratings are stated on every product page, so you can check before you order.

What's the difference between gooseneck, factory, ranch and cottage wall lights?

The difference is the arm — the shade families are shared across all four styles. A gooseneck arm curves up and out to throw light away from the wall, which is why it's the classic choice over garage doors, signage and wide entries; projection matters, and ours are listed in centimetres on every product. A factory wall light uses a straight, rigid arm for a cleaner industrial line. A ranch light mounts the shade close to a solid aluminium backing plate — compact, tough, and well suited to exposed walls. And farmhouse/cottage styles use a traditional curved arm scaled for doorways and porches. Because the same Australian-made shades fit every arm style, you can run one shade profile and colour right around the house while varying the mount to suit each wall. If you're unsure, start from how far the light needs to reach, then pick the arm that gets it there.

Do outdoor wall lights need to be installed by an electrician?

Yes — our outdoor wall lights are hardwired 230 V/50 Hz fittings, and in Australia all fixed mains wiring work must legally be carried out by a licensed electrician. The good news is that installation is straightforward for a sparkie: each light mounts to the wall on its plate or arm base and connects directly to the mains circuit, so replacing an existing wall light is typically a quick job, and adding new positions is easily bundled into any renovation or build. Lamping is standard E27 (Edison screw), so there are no proprietary drivers or transformers to fail down the track — when a globe eventually dies, you replace it yourself in seconds. If you're planning positions for a new build, give your electrician the mounting-plate dimensions from the product page and decide switch or sensor control before the plaster goes up.

Can I get outdoor wall lights in Colorbond colours?

Yes — every Barn Light wall light is powder-coated to order in our Carrum Downs workshop, and matching the Colorbond palette is one of the most common requests we get. Matching your roof, gutters or garage door ties the lighting into the build rather than leaving it looking bolted on. Beyond the Colorbond-matched range you can choose from our full colour library — classic black and white through to metallics and two-tone combinations with a contrasting interior. Powder coat is the right finish for Australian conditions: it's baked on, UV-stable and far more durable outdoors than wet paint. If you're deciding between two or three colours, order our powder-coated colour swatches first — they're real coated metal samples posted to your door, not printed cards, so what you see on the swatch in your own light is exactly what arrives on the fitting.
