Built for exposed positions — every light in this range is IP55-rated straight out of the box, sealed against driving rain, dust and coastal salt spray. Wall lights, pendants and ceiling lights, Australian made from marine-grade materials, so the weather side of the house gets the same style as the sheltered one.

IP55 is an Ingress Protection rating, and the two digits answer two separate questions. The first 5 covers solids: the fitting is protected against dust in quantities that could interfere with its operation — grit, sand and insects stay out of the electrics. The second 5 covers water: the fitting withstands low-pressure water jets from any direction, which in real terms means horizontal driven rain, hose-down cleaning and salt spray, not just vertical drizzle. Compare that with IP44, which handles splashing water only — fine under cover, not fine on an exposed wall. Every light in this collection is IP55 as supplied: the sealing is built into the shade assembly and the cable entries, using a commercial-grade compound that cures into a flexible waterproof barrier. The rating applies to the whole fitting as we build it, so there's nothing extra to buy or apply on site.
Let the position decide. If the light sits under a solid roof — a veranda, porch or eave — where rain can only ever splash it, IP44 is genuinely enough, and the wider Barn Light range gives you more styles at that rating. Choose IP55 when weather reaches the fitting directly: exposed façades with no eave above, sea-facing walls in the spray zone, and anywhere you'd expect wind to drive rain sideways onto the light. IP55 is also the sensible default when you simply don't want to think about it — the cost difference is modest and the sealed fittings shrug off conditions the rating sheet doesn't anticipate, like hose-down cleaning. A practical audit: walk the house in your head during a storm. Anywhere you picture water hitting the wall, specify from this collection; everywhere else, choose on style and let the standard outdoor rating do its job.
Three things, in order: the base metal, the finish, and the sealing. Our weatherproof fittings are aluminium, which oxidises harmlessly rather than rusting the way steel does — the single biggest factor in coastal lifespan. Over that, a baked powder-coat finish seals the surface completely; it's applied in our Carrum Downs workshop and is far more resistant to salt corrosion than wet paint, which is why the same finish is trusted on coastal roofing and window frames. Finally, IP55 sealing keeps salt-laden moisture out of the electrical interior, where corrosion does invisible damage. Your part in the partnership is small: give the fittings an occasional freshwater rinse so salt never sits and concentrates on the surface, and choose lighter colours if the wall cops brutal afternoon sun — they show chalking later than dark colours in extreme exposure. Do that, and coastal positioning becomes a styling question, not a durability one.
Nearly the full Barn Light look is available at IP55 — this isn't a separate utilitarian range, it's the same Australian-made families, sealed. Wall lights include caged and bunker styles alongside gooseneck and plate-backed designs; pendants come in chain-hung and caged cord styles for verandas and alfresco areas; and ceiling lights cover flush and stem mounts for undercover spaces that still catch weather. The caged designs deserve a special mention: the cast guard over glass isn't just industrial styling — it's practical protection for fittings in high-traffic or exposed positions, which is why the style originated on ships and factory walls. Everything is powder-coated to order in any of our colours, including Colorbond matches, so a fully exposed beach house can run the same colour story as a sheltered suburban one. If a style you want isn't showing in this collection, ask — the range grows steadily.
