Our Beacon Industrial Guard Cord Pendant follows the design aesthetic of antique ship lamps. A maritime feature of older ships featured a high wattage electrical globe with thick glass and wire cage to protect the light from the elements.

As we’ve designed each component separately on all of our Beacon lights, we have a long list of customization options available to suit your own style. Select from three different cast styles; Standard, Thick, and Wire Guard, each designed with a certain look in mind.

Which Nautical Styled Cast Guard?

Our Standard cast guard is our run-of-the-mill favourite given its smooth edges that allow more light output versus our Thick Cast Guard. Looking for something chunky, heavy duty, and football proof? That’s our Thick Cast Guard. Our Wire guard is great for those of you looking for vintage flair.

As our lights contain a thick glass, they are designed to accommodate a 60W incandescent bulb with glass fitted, otherwise 60W max. The fundamental difference between our product and bunker lights is that the latter usually have a maximum of 40W to 50W, which is too low for residential spaces let alone commercial lighting.

The listed wattage of our Beacon Pendants is 60W and therefore is ideal for industrial, commercial and residential lighting purposes.

Beacon Lighting vs. Bunker Lights

The reason we’ve called our lights ‘Beacon’s‘ or ‘Beacon Industrial‘ rather than the generic term of “Bunker Lights (or similar deviations)” is to ensure there is no confusion between our high-quality product and low-cost alternatives which are typically marketed as Bunker Cage Lights or simply ‘Bunker Lights’.

You’ll find our competitors selling “Barn Lights” under a generic name, we were called “Barn Light” before those product listings originated. The fundamental different is quality – ours Die-Casted Aluminium, compared to Cheaper, badly powder coated Steel

Materials & craft

Every shade is hand-spun in our Carrum Downs workshop — shaped on a lathe, not pressed in a die. We work in aluminium for three reasons:

• It’s light. A spun-aluminium shade weighs a fraction of a steel equivalent, easier to ship and mount, with less load on brackets, arms, and ceiling roses.
• It doesn’t corrode. Steel rusts. Aluminium doesn’t — even in coastal salt or humid climates. Powdercoat seals it; the underlying metal stays sound for the long haul.
• It takes more skill to spin. Aluminium is softer and less forgiving than steel, so a clean shade silhouette is a craft outcome, not a stamping outcome.
