Modern or Vintage?

You’d be surprised to learn – We’re not always right. Released as a vintage pendant, The Hobart was immediately part of the “family group conversation” after release – family informed me that they consider the Hobart to decidedly  modern. You decide?

Due to its simple slant, the Hobart is ideal for the modern kitchen replacing your ugly kitchen ceiling lights has never been easier. The addition of a variety of cord styles gives you the ability to mix the old with the new without taking sacrificing on quality. Blend French Braided Cotton Twist for the vintage as an example.

The Hobart looks familiar…

You’ve seen it everywhere, yet nowhere these days. It looks like a billiard table light? – Correct. It looks like a kitchen island pendant? – Correct. It looks vintage, yet modern enough to compliment any modern kitchen aesthetic. The Hobart has a curious history because its not truly ours. If you are looking for a shallow bowl light to create a well lit (and dispersed!) kitchen island, but don’t want to see a glaring bulb, The Hobart stem pendant is the best of both worlds.

Our featured simple “hard neck banding” that combined with the sleek and almost timeless styling that takes up far less room than traditional rectangular pendant lights.

The History of Barn Light’s Hobart

Why the Hobart? It was once named as “The Classic”, admittedly classically designed however not very descriptive. Customers made it all to easy to call it the “The Asian Hat”, “The Rice Paddy” – or – “The Other Witches’ Hat” (that’s the Astro) because that’s what they’d call it over the phone – Not exactly culturally insensitive, however very descriptive. After discussing the re-release of this Shade design, we settled on “Hobart”, yet we wanted to have a *reason* to call the Hobart, the Hobart.

The Hobart Shade was once called “The Regatta” – aka – The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race by our Metalspinners as the shade replicates the shade sails from a time that this race was probably still won in wooden ships. “The Regatta” shade mold is officially older than every employee that works here at Barn Light.

Materials & craft

Every shade is hand-spun in our Carrum Downs workshop — shaped on a lathe, not pressed in a die. We work in aluminium for three reasons:

• It’s light. A spun-aluminium shade weighs a fraction of a steel equivalent, easier to ship and mount, with less load on brackets, arms, and ceiling roses.
• It doesn’t corrode. Steel rusts. Aluminium doesn’t — even in coastal salt or humid climates. Powdercoat seals it; the underlying metal stays sound for the long haul.
• It takes more skill to spin. Aluminium is softer and less forgiving than steel, so a clean shade silhouette is a craft outcome, not a stamping outcome.
