Distinguished by its cascading neck, dimpled contours, and wavy silhouette, it offers a “modern twist” on the beloved rustic bell shape. Where traditional shades are often limited by simple lines, the Old Dixie provides a sophisticated visual texture that complements both classic homesteads and ultra-modern urban lofts.

A Masterclass in Metal Spinning

The secret to the Old Dixie’s intricate detail lies in its history. Historically, hard-edged and concave designs were unaffordable for the average person because the wooden or untreated steel molds used for spinning would wear away quickly, leaving a flat, curved edge.Today, we carry the torch in our workshop using heat-treated steel molds – tooling originally designed to handle heavy steel porcelain enamel. We now strictly spin high-grade aluminium on these molds, ensuring an environmentally conscious process that results in identical, sharp, and high-definition details for every shade that leaves our floor.

Choose Your Scale: Three Unique Sizes

The Old Dixie is a modular powerhouse, offering three distinct profiles to fit your specific lighting plan:

The 28cm Shade (The Modern Cottage): Released to accommodate smaller architectural nooks. It is the perfect scale for laundry rooms, powder room mirrors, or as a repetitive “run” along a narrow hallway.
The 33cm Shade (Wide Dispersal): A versatile “shallow-bowl” specialist. It is designed for areas that require a wide field of light without a deep vertical footprint, making it ideal for standard entryways and interior wall accents.
The 43cm Shade (The Statement Bell): Our flagship deep-bowl design. Its large, rounded curves spread light broadly and evenly off the inside of the bell, allowing you to fill expansive spaces, large verandas, and commercial storefronts with a single, gorgeous fixture.

Engineered for Every Environment

Standard IP44 Protection: Handcrafted from durable extruded Australian aluminium, the standard Old Dixie is splash-proof and outdoor-rated for residential and commercial entryways.
The Beacon (formerly Atomic) IP55 Upgrade: For areas facing full weather exposure, high winds, or coastal sea spray, the Caged Beacon version is the gold standard. By adding our die-cast “Bunker” style cage and protective glass, the fixture is elevated to an IP55 rating, ensuring your modern classic survives for generations.

Materials & craft

Every shade is hand-spun in our Carrum Downs workshop — shaped on a lathe, not pressed in a die. We work in aluminium for three reasons:

It’s light. A spun-aluminium shade weighs a fraction of a steel equivalent, easier to ship and mount, with less load on brackets, arms, and ceiling roses.
It doesn’t corrode. Steel rusts. Aluminium doesn’t — even in coastal salt or humid climates. Powdercoat seals it; the underlying metal stays sound for the long haul.
It takes more skill to spin. Aluminium is softer and less forgiving than steel, so a clean shade silhouette is a craft outcome, not a stamping outcome. Every shade passes through a spinner’s hands before it reaches yours.

For products “in-stock”, we generally ship within the two-three (2-3) business days. The general rule for online orders is “two weeks lead-time”.
Certain finishes are quicker/easier to produce, thus the higher the complexity of your order (multiple colours/products), the longer the lead-time.

Our Warranties

As an Industrial Lighting Manufacturer, we’re certain our products will exceed warranties published. We have some understandable exclusions however expect the best from our lighting products and you should too.

Three (3) years from the date of purchase; where the,

Lighting utilised in a residential setting (House / Home / Unit).
Lighting installed in the correct Location Rating as certified.
Lighting powder-coated in Dulux Electro Powder Coat or “Coastal Colours” as defined

Two (2) years from the date of purchase; where,

Where Lighting is used in a commercial settings (Restaurant / Public Space / High-Traffic).
Any component of the Good is powder-coated in anything but Dulux Electro powder coat or WS975-Galvanised^{Designed to age}.
Where any item of the product is situated within 200m from a coastal environment (excluding Coastal Rated Powdercoats).

Swapping Products & Components

Our ability as a manufacturer is to supply you with options, far exceeding your local lighting store. Have you purchased a wall light, and would have loved it to be a pendant instead, or decided it was too big on first impressions and needed to downsize? We can offer you this service, and a touch more. We offer no charge to down-size the shade, however charge the cost of the difference (ie $20) plus freight incurred by us as a courtesy. Hardware, components and similar products are charged as a proverbial (and nominal) cost. Need to know more? Contact us!

Barn Light provides a generous 90-day refund or 180 day exchange for change of mind purchase. Over 90-days and within 180-Days, we offer a credit for the same value.
