High Lights from our First Homeshow (April 2022)

The Build of the Home Show Stand

A little bit of history (and as he’d probably also say arse-kissing) is that you’ve probably come across Carl’s work if you purchased from Barn Light between 2014 and 2017. Carl came suggested to us from a family friend – Telling me a hardworking older gentleman was looking for work. Let’s be honest here, I’m certain Carl was semi-retired and completely bored. Carl was funny. Carl’s also lucky that we didn’t have a HR complaint between the two of us in a two person building.

Carl built our stand during the middle of a pandemic and got it to a point that we could polish the guts off a timber frame made from Bunnings, into the stand that you’ll see either this month or last Aprils. The man needs some credit because he rarely gives himself enough.

You’d think that after two cancelled HomeShow appearances that we’d given up on exhibiting during 2021? You’d be right. After having the booth assembled by Carl in the entryway of Factory #7 in early 2022, we ended up ignoring it for a further two months waiting for lockdowns to end, and life to resume as normal.

Well.. Lockdowns did end, and we were right up a creek without a paddle. We didn’t actually have lights to install, nor any component ready to transport. We ended up booking an AirBnB for the week that we stayed in the city – in a vague recollection of the days and nights that went into the booth – we forgot to check-in, completely overlooking a nights accommodation to head back to the factory (easily an hour’s drive) to pickup some hardware before heading back home. That’s right. We paid for a hotel room that we forgot about due to sleep deprivation.

With the dedication of our staff and copious amount of energy drinks, we persevered creating a stand that was worth a repeat as many visitors commented upon. “Wow – How did you get those bricks in here?!” (Its Vinyl on Alucapanel) right through to “Can I buy that right now” (and pull it off the wall? I asked) and “Why didn’t anyone else put some effort into their stand? This is bloody awesome and REAL” (coming from a builder knocking on the weatherboards – that was a compliment to remember).

If you want to take the time to visit us @ the Melbourne Home Show and take a look at our lights, we’ll have a very special VIP coupon code available to you. To verify that you’ve visited – You’ll need to remember what colour T-Shirts Melinda & I will be wearing. It’ll be one of three colours (and not the purple below!)

How it ended vs. how it looked ...

Yeah – that’s exactly what it looked like two days before the show was supposed to start.

How to get to the Melbourne Home Show

Where is it? The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is located at 1 Convention Centre Pl, South Wharf VIC 3006.

I need more information: Visit the MCEC website: https://mcec.com.au/visit

Driving? Directions using Google Maps

Parking? Nightmare so Melinda & I prefer to pre-book (using the Wilson Parking App) wherever possible. It does take you down some interesting (safe, but interesting) streets, alleyways, and other “off-zootopia” parking spaces like under freeways etc. By far the most convenient parking solution since PayStay was developed.
